USWeb and BUSINESS WEEK to Conduct Web Broadcast on the Internet Economy

Joe Firmage, CEO of USWeb, and Michael Mandel, economics editor at BUSINESS WEEK, discuss implications of the Internet on businesses into the next century

SANTA CLARA, CA. - September 9, 1998 - USWeb Corporation (Nasdaq: USWB) announced that on Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at 11:00 AM EDT, Joe Firmage, USWeb CEO, will host Michael Mandel, economics editor at BUSINESS WEEK, in an open forum on a teleconference and SiteCall to explore the impact the Internet is having on companies world wide.

USWeb is creating a public forum to discuss the issues and benefits of the Internet in todays rapidly changing economy. By providing a vehicle for delivering information far more cheaply and universally then ever before, the Internet is dramatically changing the very fundamentals of business, said Joe Firmage. In todays competitive global market entire industries are moving toward commoditization. While the Internet is causing this upheaval in the value chain of many businesses, it also providing the great vehicle for adding value, reducing costs and leveraging competitive differentiation.

The general public, press, financial community, USWeb clients and shareholders are invited to join the teleconference and simultaneous live Internet presentation Sept. 10 at 11:00 AM EDT by calling 800-360-6893 (U.S.) or 706-645-9749 (International) and going to http://www.presentations.usweb.com/ to view the live presentation on the Internet. (Please dial-in and register at the Web site at least five to ten minutes before the scheduled call).

In a recent special report on the economy in the next century, BUSINESS WEEK noted that Internet-based electronic commerce seems certain to provide much of the fuel that will power the 21st Century Economy. The report charts the affect of Internet-based commerce on both established companies and start-ups in a variety of industries, showing how these companies are using e-commerce to reach new customers, gain significant economies of scale, and even change the economic structure of their markets.

Michael Mandel was a driving force behind BUSINESS WEEKs recent double issue on the New Economy. Mandel won the coveted Gerald Loeb Award this year for cover stories The New Business Cycle and How Long Can This Last? Before joining BUSINESS WEEK in 1989, Mandel was assistant professor of economics at the Stern School of Business at New York University, and received his PhD from Harvard University.
